Our selection this Monday is one we checked out from our local public library (which still allows you to borrow DVDs at no cost for two days and renew them over the phone!). Open Season is an animated movie that came out in 2006 with the voice talents of Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher. Martin Lawrence’s character, Boog, is a grizzly bear who was rescued as a cub by a forest ranger named Beth voiced by Debra Messing. Beth and Boog live a peaceful existence that includes Boog performng in shows and watching Wheel of Fortune at night. Boog’s life is turned upside down when he attempts to help a deer named Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) escape the clutches of the illegal hunter Shaw (Gary Sinise) after realizing Elliot is tied to the hood of Shaw’s car still alive. Boog ultimately ends up being re-introduced to the wild and is, of course, ill-equipt to deal with finding his own food and dealing with the other animals. All does eventually end up well. There are a few moments that might be scary to younger kids involving Shaw and his illegal hunting of animals in particular. There are also a couple of poop jokes about where a bear goes, etc. But for the most part it is just funny and sweet. My kids are even watching it right now one more time before it goes back to the library this morning.
